Estate Picker of the Month
November 2014 |
Meet Sheri (or is it Sherry, we didn't ask),
Sheri is one attractive picker, (Sorry Guys), and she is not a newcomer by
any means. Sheri has been picking as long as we can remember, in fact I
think we saw her at one of the first Estate Sales we attended 20 some years
ago. Sheri was a long time regular vendor indoors at the old WILDWOOD flea
market. We distinctly remember her shop as a perfect blend of antique &
vintage all the way to the weird and unusual. Peace signs, Lava lamps, Mood
rings and an overall psychedelic influence define Sheri in a lot of ways.
She is sort of a millennial hippy and if I didn't know better, we would
swear we saw her at Woodstock! If you think Sheri is just all about vintage
or contemporary collectibles, we would caution you to think again. Sheri
knows more about 19th and early 20th century antiques than some dealers put
together. Sheri has conducted estate sales from time to time and her prices
were fair but if you ask us, picking is where her heart is. You won't always
see her week in and week out at estate sales but she never quits coming up
with things. Family sales, door knocking, word of mouth. Its called
underground picking! Flying under the radar. It also doesn't hurt that Sheri
operates an antique shop on Camp Horne road where people can bring stuff in.
There we haggled with her over the price of a reverse painting dipicting the
sinking of the Titanic some years ago. When we ran into her a few weeks ago
and took this photo, we reminded her of it, to which she retorted, "Still
have it, it aint for sale"!

Dual Estate Pickers of the Month
September/October 2014 |
Meet the dynamic duo of Mike and Scott. Its hard to believe its been two years to the month since Tom and Coleen
where the first picking "team" and now here come this Power Picking Pair of
Mike and Scott. These guys are serious high end pickers and you won't find
them buying junk. Together they have built a business out of their picking
and have become known as "those audio guys" to many who have witnessed them
in action. We don't want to give away their trade secrets but one of their
recent PICKS was sold to a New York recording studio who boasts Paul
McCartney and Mick Jagger among others as their clients. Their humble
beginnings came from a chance meeting at church, a conversation about their
common interest in electronic gear and a commitment to find the lost
equipment of their youth. From there they graduated to Craigslist and
finally bursting on to the Estate Sale scene about 5 years ago. They have
networked themselves into a position where much of their recent acquisitions
are from word of mouth contacts but estate sales are still a big part of
their strategy. These two are not only great pickers but really nice guys
that offer fun & interesting conversation while waiting for sales to open.
Other passions include 60's and 70's muscle cars for Mike, of which he has
owned no less than two dozen and Scott pursues Rugs/tribal pieces and art
work, anything with great color and texture, WHO KNEW! As a natural
sidebar to their interests, they have been gobbling up old music in any
format recently, so you record pickers better watch out! You just never know
where this team will turn up next, but if there is old stereo equipment or
music, you better get up early if you want any of it.

Estate Picker of the Month August
2014 |
Meet Scott, our August 2014 Picker of the Month. Scott
needs no introduction to us longtime pickers. As owner of
SOLO ESTATE SALES Scott is one
of the few people that are on BOTH sides of the business. He gave up his
shop, but for a while there you could say THREE sides of the business. Now
his picks just fill his 18 room Victorian home! Scott specializes in
Antiques along with Antique and vintage jewelry. His estate sale
business is purely a liquidation company and he is among the top 3 companies
with regards to true liquidation pricing. We still have TOYS from his
Duquesne sale 3 years ago, such were the great prices, we couldn't stop
buying! Scott says "every item has a story" and he wants to find out as much
as he can about it. Even as a young boy, Scott would purchase items from
yard and garage sales and then spend hours reading and researching them.
Later he apprenticed to Mrs. Pearson in White Oak and subsequently worked in
and around auction houses, still learning all the while. It must have really
paid off as we have overheard Scott on more than one occasion schooling long
time liquidators on what they had. Once while standing in line he had to
explain to a liquidator that the item she had outside the front door was
actually a porcupine boot brush and not a door stop as she had assumed. The
embarrassed liquidator, standing red faced in the doorway as Scott
demonstrated by wiping his foot on the item and a good laugh was had by all
in line. Scott loves to educate people if they want to know about an item.
Scott's all time pick was at a family sale who let him in early and standing
there, all alone, and to his astonishment was an Art Deco Platinum ring with
a 5 carat round diamond surrounded by 3 carats of emeralds. Can you spell
NEW CAR! Now that's a picker

Estate Picker of the Month
JULY
2014 |
July's Picker of the Month is SAM! Sam wants you to exercise
your freedom to attend an Estate Sale of your choice. Go to a sale in ANY
neighborhood you choose, because its your RIGHT!
Sam attends each and every sale, every week. Not only in
Pittsburgh but in every city and every state, because Sam embodies the
Freedom that each and every one of us carries from our home, to the roads we
travel on to get to the sale and the house we enter when we arrive. To park
all over the place and screw up other people's neighborhoods, if only for
one day. He allows us the freedom to go to any store and buy any coffee, tea
or doughnut or other goods on the way.
Uncle Sam reminds us that July 4th is really
"INDEPENDANCE
DAY" and that we should stop, for just a
minute and savor our freedom. Remember when you are watching fireworks,
eating hotdogs, view a sporting event, boating or jet skiing on the water,
that many Americans fought for our freedoms, and have been fighting to
maintain them for over 200 years.
The tree of Liberty must be refreshed from time to time
with the blood of Patriots and tyrants.
God bless all you pickers and we hope to return in
August with a plain old, simple ordinary AMERICAN Picker.

Estate Picker of the Month June 2014 |
To longtime Pickers, GRACIE, Our June 2014 PICKER
of the MONTH
needs no introduction. We've been after Gracie for a long time to be Picker of
the month, and we finally nailed her down! Hailing from the South Hills, Gracie
has literally been picking since a child as her Mother worked as a clothing
sorter at St Vincent De Paul. She got to keep anything she found in the pockets
of
the clothing and she brought home watches Jewelry & small trinkets almost every
day. Gracie was fascinated and was hooked. Her parents sold the stuff she found
at
the old Woodland Flea Market in West Mifflin when it was 50 cents to buy or
sell. She couldn't learn enough and would stay up late at night reading Antique
and collectible guides and was mentored under the tutelage of an old woman
antique dealer, all of which eventually brought her the top of the picking heap
and afforded her the ability to make a living solely upon her picks. Although
Gracie is one of the friendliest pickers you'll ever meet, she doesn't play well
with others when she is out to get her pick! Gracie is so keen with her eye and
has honed her skills to the point she is frequently called upon by professional
liquidators for pricing information and item identification. Gracie has some
advice for young pickers that has served well over the years. She says. "If I Like It I Buy
It, Someone Else Will Like It Too" She further states that you can't be
apprehensive about what you will, or will not, find, scooting around from sale
to sale. Instead she said "Timing is everything, some days may not be good, but
when it is meant to be your day, IT WILL BE! We hear you Gracie!

Estate Picker of the Month May 2014 |
Our MAY 2014 PICKER of the MONTH is former Pittsburgh Mayor
TOM Murphy. We caught up with Tom a little while back while he
was busy picking one of is favorite items, BOOKS, and there were plenty of them
as Tom litterally had his hands full as he emerged from behind some stacked
boxes he had just finished "picking". Tom is a seasoned vetern of the picking
game and we remember seeing him years ago at a Samanta Parish sale in Regent
Square where there just happened to be a stamp collection, which is Tom's other
area of interest. Tom looks really great these days as you can see above
although he was a little aloof (or perhaps just focused on his picking) however
pleasant, as I followed him around trying to get my interview. When I inquired
about his feelings toward picking as compared to elected office, he looked at me
and simply said, "No Stress" which undoubtedly acounts for his vigours
appearance. Tom's favorite liquidator is Jaye Wilkinson but you might see him
just about anywhere if there are stamps or books.

Estate Picker of the Month April 2014 |
Can you spot the famous picker in the photo above? That is
Correct! Its AL who is standing on the right and he is our APRIL picker
of the month! Not sure about that other guy but we've seen him around
before, maybe on TV. Al has been picking flea markets and garage sales since he
was a young man but it has only been recently that we've noticed him picking
estate sales. Al likes to pick toys and Christmas items and has a nice
collection which started with antique toys handed down to him from his father.
He might actually be the next Frank Fritz as he is always trying to BUNDLE, his
already negotiated "discount" price. We saw him in action recently, it works
like this. AL: How much for this Tonka Truck?
Liquidator: Originally 125.00 I'll go down to 40 AL:
How much for this other toy? Liquidator: I was asking
75, you can have it for 25. AL: HOW MUCH IF I BUNDLE THEM!!!
I gotta tell ya Al, U Da Man! Al's other interests are NASCAR and he has a
vintage 1967 GTO that he restored. He also has an original Framall Cub tractor
that he plans to restore. It was in his family for years and was used by his
father on the farm he grew up on east of Pittsburgh. AL is going to be a heavy
hitter on the picking scene so welcome him when you run across his path but HIDE
THE TOYS!

Estate Picker of the Month March 2014 |
Meet
John! John is from the South Hills and has lived in the Pittsburgh Area all of
his life. He and his wife Christy started going to estate sales over 10 years ago
so he is no newbie.
He likes to be one of the first in line waiting for a door to open at a Saturday sale but
is almost always late (fourth in line at best).
It was apparent to us right from the start that John has an eye for Techo and Electronics.
When we first ran into him he snagged a Toshiba laptop for 50 bucks! That
was a great find and John scrubbed it and loaded it with Linux. John and Christy used to learn about the estate sales in the Pennysaver
but after a break from the sales for some length of time, they stumbled onto Pittsburgh
Estate Sales.Com and the fun returned again!
John has discovered what we've known for a long time, that some of the best finds at sales are
the items which are not advertised. "Some of the best estate sales are the ones that don't list a lot of featured items".
John says "My strategy for success is to be persistent but patient. The persistent picker will attend a sale on a Saturday with the chance of coming home empty handed – but if you don't attend any sales, you don't have a chance at all
of finding a great bargain."
He went on to say " Sometimes the quantity of items for sale can be overwhelming when the room is full. A patient picker will take their time to look closely at the items in the room and will find a treasure that others may have overlooked"
and to that WE say, Amen! John loves to talk about his picking and exchange
stories but describes himself as a bit shy, so you may have to ask him first!

Estate Picker of the Month February 2014 |
Meet
Andy! Andy was one of those pickers we just kept
bumping into no matter where we went. North, South, East,
West, there was Andy so we couldn't resist making him
February picker. Andy started out picking records from
garage and yard sales, but now some 8 years later he is a
self described "Estate Sale Addict" Andy's primary picking
interest centers around Music and Literature. He loves to
pick records and tapes (33s, 45s 78's, reel to reel, it
doesn't matter) Also as an avid reader he picks books for his
home library. He also collects old electronics and audio. He
really hopes to find a ham radio at an estate sale some day
but says his wife would probably throw it out, as she would
another tube radio, OR a set of speakers should he return
from a sale with any of those! (Editor:
Andy, sounds like you need to get your wife into picking)This winter of 2014 isn't even enough to stop Andy,
he braved an early Saturday morning snow storm and drove
from his home in the eastern suburbs all the way to Beaver,
PA only to be rewarded with 1,000's of records and no other
buyers. A PICKERS DREAM! Currently Andy is a
professional chef but decided to switch gears and has
recently enrolled in nursing school. One career he isn't
giving up any time soon is his new love for Estate Sale
Picking.

Estate Picker of the Month January 2014 |
Meet
Jodi! When we first ran across Jodi she was digging
through some old Christmas items
in Beaver Pennsylvania. She was digging through the box so
fast it looked like a dog burying a bone. Old Christmas
items are some of her favorite things to pick. Her step
father Ed, her faithful picking companion can nearly always
be seen standing by with a box to catch the overflow as Jodi
scoops up the deals without hesitation. You see, Jodi is on
a mission, she has to pick nearly all of her inventory for
the website
Beekman 1802, for which she is the sole curator. She
also sells "nice things" on her
Etsy store
and then siphons off the leftovers by selling them on Ebay!
<<WHAP>>, take that Ebay! Jodi just loves vintage,
antique, primitive and associated items, so she will pick
just about anything in those categories. When we asked for a
recent picking memory, she told us with a devilish little
smile it was the antique cow bell she bought for 50 cents
that sold for 60.00. Jodi originally hails from New Brighton
but is now happily married and living in Sewickley. However,
if you think you're only going to see her picking up the
Ohio river, forget about it. She has already spread out and
told me she particularly likes digging in those old South
Hills neighborhoods where she has had many good finds. You
just can't keep a good picker down!

Estate Picker of the Month December 2013 |
Meet
Rhonda! Rhonda rounds out what has been a
great year of picking in 2013 as our December "Picker of the
Month". When we bumped into Rhonda at a recent sale it was
apparent from the beginning she is a hardcore picker. Down
under a work bench digging out old rusty tools to save a 100
year old primitive box she has just purchased. Many of
Rhonda's picks go to the Antique store she and her mother
run in Bridgeville. Her store is "Accentique" and it
actually started as a dress boutique. A strong influence
from her mother and aunt who are long time antique
collectors soon changed Rhonda's direction and the antique
store was born in the late 90's. The store now
includes a mixture of Furniture, Glassware, Artwork, Country
Antiques and of course a large selection of collectibles and
just about any other antique she can pick. When we saw her
at a recent sale she bought an old pair of antique wooden
skis in addition to the box so it was no surprise when she
reported her favorite finds are PRIMITIVES and the unusual.
When picking Estate Sales she heads to the basement and
garage areas first for that very reason. She also loves
picking the 60s and 70's which she refers to as the Retro
era. When not on the Estate Sale path she is picking garage
sales and thrift shops with her mother while her aunt still
helps stock the store with her picks from Beaver county. You
can find many of Rhonda's picks at the store which is open 7
days a week, Mon-Sat 10-5 and Sun 11 to "3ish" at 406
Station Street, Bridgeville, 15017. The phone number is
412-221-1388. The store is absolutely packed with a large
variety so stop in and visit her. Tell her you saw her on
Pittsburgh Estate Sales!

Estate Pickers of the Month November 2013 |
Meet
Mike & Cheryl
Mike & Cheryl, husband & wife pickers from
Whitehall are very familiar faces in the estate sale community. They started their
picking over 25 years ago!
Mike & Cheryl began their picking career at the old Woodland
Drive In theatre flea market. Cheryl has fond
memories of pushing their
son, who at the time was only a toddler, through the rows & rows of
treasures! Today, you will see them at multiple sales each weekend, normally
throughout the South Hills, although they are known to travel for a really good
sale. Mike is always looking for TOOLS! Mike’s favorite hobby is tinkering with
race
cars with his stock car racing son. He loves
a good deal on tools, because like most tool guys, he believes you can never
have enough! Due to his love
of racing, it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that his biggest & best
estate sale finds were CARS! He has
purchased 3 cars through estate sales!
While Mike is most likely found in the garage, you will find
Cheryl searching for décor. She loves to
decorate her home with estate sale finds. She is never looking for a particular
item, she likes when something “jumps
out at her”.
Together, Mike & Cheryl are a dynamic duo. They are never in a rush and will always
strike up friendly conversation. They
love the thrill of the chase, the excitement of a good find, a great deal and a
fun negotiation!

Estate Picker of the Month October 2013 |
Meet
Gary. Gary is a veteran picker who hails
from the Eastern Suburbs but we have seen him pretty much
anywhere in the area. The first thing he ever sold was a
1975 Lincoln Mark IV automobile. He soon realized it didn't
have to be that big and started picking more moderately
sized items which he built his business upon. Still, most
pickers wouldn't consider Gary's "finds" small as he has
developed a discerning eye for electro-mechanical or just
plain mechanical stuff, such as radios, telephones, sewing
machines, watches, clocks and fans. One thing that he has
become somewhat of an expert on is old typewriters. This
past summer Gary "Picked" a typewriter that was one of only
seven ever made and contrary to what many pickers believe,
some of them are quite valuable. Although we hesitate to let
the cat out of the bag, Gary seems quite willing to talk
about them and share his knowledge. If you run into Gary at
an upcoming sale, don't let your guard down thinking he will
just pick mechanical items. He is an experienced picker with
a vast knowledge and enjoys finding anything from tools and
knifes to pottery, china and kitchenware. One of his early
favorites were carpentry tools, such as wood planes but so
many of those have hit the market he only looks for real
bargains on those. Its not all about the money though, Gary
finds the weekend picking good therapy for his stressful day
job. In that, we think many pickers already have something
in common with him!
|
Estate Picker of the Month September 2013 |
Meet
Chip! Chip is a long time picker and even
though this photo would seem to indicate, a dumpster diver.
Truth be told, Chip isn't a big dumpster diver although he
does admit to finding a Native American basket in the trash
which he subsequently sold for nearly 200 bucks. Chip's
specialty is American art pottery and we can attest to that.
We first met him some 10 years or so ago at the auction of
Jeff's antique mall on RT 88 as the entire contents were
being auctioned by Constantine and Meyer. We were the
successful bidder on an entire booth but Chip followed us
through the mall and outside the door all the while
clamoring for that ONE piece of pottery that happened to be
included in our lot. Of course we relented and sold it to
him, or GAVE it to him, can't remember. He probably sold it
on Ebay for 5,000 bucks! So great is his knowledge he is
sometimes called upon to help with pricing by Estate
Liquidators. With more than 10 years as a picker, from his
humble beginnings which included selling his Mother in law's
knick knacks, he has now expanded into any number of
different categories in which he describes himself as
"dangerous". Chip enjoys the camaraderie of the Pittsburgh
pickers. Quoting from Chip "Great Stories while waiting
in line, quite hysterical, commentary on the merchandise and
a general willingness to share knowledge." Chip came to
Pittsburgh some 25 years ago and is apparently here to stay.
When not out picking, he is a full time father to two
teenagers.

Estate Pickers of the Month August 2013 |
Although FRANK & PATTI need no
introduction to long time pickers many of you may not know
how they got started. Frank found and purchased a Victrolia
at the old Wildwood Flea Market. That was way back in the
80's and they haven't stopped yet as they pose with one of
their latest finds, a vintage Pepsi Cola Cash Register. They
have had some really good finds over the years, one of which
was a complete set of fantastic, mint condition, Art deco
slip shade sconces and chandelier which allowed them to put
down a handsome sum on their son's wedding in Philadelphia,
Enough said? Frank loves the thrill of the chase and Patti
loves the research, marketing and sale of the items. Always
on the lookout for Antique, Retro, Shabby Chic, Mid Century
Art Deco and ..... Well, you get the idea. Frank, a computer
IT guy and Patti a corporate administrator have met a lot of
friends over the years and are they are the nicest people
and willing to talk and share knowledge. So, if you want to
know where they found those sconces, just walk up and ask
them, you'll find them standing somewhereinline.

Estate Picker of the Month July 2013 |
Meet John ,
our July 2013 Picker of the month.
John and his "better half" Rose (who prefers to remain
anonymous) have been picking Pittsburgh for a LONG TIME!
Although if you've seen John, you've seen Rose! We remember
first seeing them 10 years ago, in the middle of winter as
they were waiting in line under blankets. The
very first thing John looks for when arriving at the sale is
a George Costanza* John lives 35 miles
north of the city but drives in on Saturday sometimes going
as far south as Washington or Fayette county in search of
Toys and Advertising for which he admits an affinity. He is
also fond of old tube radios and has amassed a nice
collection just by picking over the years. Like many of the
previous pickers, as a youngster he was exposed to antiques
and other OLD THINGS by his Grandmother. John is a lively
soul and loves to joke and always seems to have a positive
outlook, even when the "Pick'ens are slim". One Saturday the
best he could do was a paper mache cow head. Not to be down
on his luck, he just put it on over his head to the delight
of several onlookers. We swear he drove home with it on! In
closing John told us he keeps picking in the hope that he
will one day uncover a signed copy of the Declaration of
independence, but he'll settle for 28½ by 55" double sash
windows.
*
If you've watched Seinfeld, you'll know, otherwise ask John!

Estate Picker of the Month June 2013 |
Meet Michael ,
our June Picker of the month.
If it seems like Michael has suddenly burst on the local
scene, it is because he really has! Michael
is a transplanted Ohioan and long time picker in the Buckeye
State. Now living in Pittsburgh and working in the computer
industry, Michael can be seen just about anywhere and
everywhere a sale is being held. Bouncing from one end of
town to the other all morning long hitting numerous sales
and scooping up his treasure. No wonder Michael describes it
as "The Thrill of the Chase". Growing up in Columbus he got
his start picking the swap meets and shows for his family's
hobby shop business. Like many of us, it was just a
progression after that. He likes picking a variety of things
and really wasn't being too specific but as he put it "one
weekend you don't find too much and think you could have
better spent your time sleeping, then the next week you find
that one treasure! Michael is getting married on June 22nd,
and we congratulate him, but you know, that is a Saturday!
Not to worry, Michael is working on a way to get out in the
morning, not sure if his bride to be will even know he's
gone. After all, he said "There is always something
out there that I don't have yet". Don't let something
like a wedding stop you Michael~ !!

Estate Picker of the Month May 2013 |
Meet Herb ,
our May Picker of the month.
Most of you long time pickers know Herb, even if you
weren’t personally acquainted with him we're sure you
recognize him. Hailing from Pittsburgh’s North Hills, Herb
can be seen far and wide, Estate sale, Auction or even
Dumpster! Herb’s humble beginnings can be traced back to his
youth when he would cut through the woods on the way to
Arnies Pinball on Rt 8. Along the way he would PICK up
anything and everything that intrigued him. Moving on from
that he started picking at the Rt 8 flea market He claims he
was the one selling playboy magazines to Paul, our Oct 2012
picker, but we think he is being tongue in cheek. Who knows!
Years later he
started picking scrap metal, pots and pans, screen doors and
aluminum for some extra cash. It didn’t take long to evolve
to picking tools which he started selling for profit at the
old Wildwood Flea market. Never without his flashlight,
these days Herb’s favorite things to pick are woodworking
and other specialty tools as well as cigarette lighters,
slot cars and other small items. Today Herb is still hard at
work picking but says it is getting consistently more
difficult to find “GOOD STUFF”. As a result he takes more
chances than he did in years past, trusting in his
intuition. And Trust us, his intuition is serving him well.
He’s a real blood hound, OR as Elvis would say, you ain't
nutin but a houndog, pick'n all the time!

Estate Picker of the Month April 2013 |
Meet Jessica!
Jessica likes OLD, plain and simple. She loves the
RETRO- Vintage aesthetic look, right down to her home decor,
much of which has been picked from local Estate Sales.
Jessica knew collecting was in her blood from a very early
age. She discovered Estate Picking while attending college
in Idaho. After a while she realized you can't continually
collect your picks so in order to avert becoming a hoarder,
like many of us she turned to selling her excess for profit.
Initially the income was just to supplement her teaching
assistant stipend but since 2008 she has been Picking and
reselling as a full time job and could not be happier. The
thrill of the hunt, or as she put it "seeking out the
treasure" are still the best part. Old Paper, Holiday
decorations, vintage clothing and 80's nostalgia are her
current favorites although when we first ran into her she
was rummaging through a box of old doll furniture. (maybe
looking for tynietoy?). We struck up a conversation
over an old doll and subsequently bumped into her again at
sales over the next 4 weeks consecutively! She was destined
to be picker of the month. Jessica usually heads for the
upstairs while her partner Ryan goes down, and if they can't
find anything to collect or sell, they just use the
opportunity to stock up on household cleaners and other
utilitarian items. She and Ryan are expecting their first
child in August!

Estate Picker of the Month March 2013 |
Meet Melissa.
Melissa hails from Utah but has found her pickers paradise
here in the country's hotbed of Estate Sales. Western PA!
After having been exposed to antiques at her Aunt & Uncles
auction house, she started picking the BURG soon after
relocating here with her husband John in 1995. Although
Melissa has a stand in the Antique Mall on Ohio River Blvd
where many of her "picks" can be found for sale, her first
love is re-purposing and many of her finds are just for that
PURPOSE! She is very talented in this area, follow her blog
Vintage
creations for some great ideas. She has also been a
guest contributor to our website blog which can be
seen here. Her daughters bedroom, one of her
projects, was featured on Apartment Therapy and she has
other articles and photos in many places on the internet.
She loves the search and takes her time, quoting Melissa "Sales
are the most rewarding when you have to work hard, like
digging for buried treasure, I like finding things in the
basement or attic that are buried in a corner under an inch
of dust and spider webs" When we ran into her last week
at a sale she spent over an hour in one little basement tool
shop. A complete list of Melissa's picking interests and
accomplishments would fill a whole book so take it from us,
she has earned her spot, and we are happy to have her, as
March picker of the month!

Estate Picker of the Month February 2013 |
Meet Rob.
Rob was born into a family of pickers, so it is not totally
his fault he has this affliction we all share! Rob's parents
are long time antique dealers. Rob and his sister went along
on garage and yard sale picking with the parents from a very
young age and it didn't take long to get the idea. Pick
something valuable for very little money and make a large
profit! Rob likens it to an Giant Easter Egg hunt, going
from sale to sale, slowly, carefully and discriminately
looking for that one egg, WITH THE MONEY INSIDE. He never
seems to be rushing and yet he never fails to find his pick.
Rob also enjoys picking for his own personal collecting
interests as well, which include antique tin & wind up toys,
Hartland Statues, Vintage advertising and Stoneware. Rob
will pick anything he knows about, and having been on many
trips to Shupp's Grove, Renningers, Antique shows and
auctions since he was a boy, he knows A LOT! We have
personally seen him wandering about a sale with great items
that were overlooked by those who are always in a hurry.
Sort of like the Rabbit and the Hare of picking. Rob is a
school teacher and is raising two young boys of his own now
so he hopes to carry on the family tradition with them as
3rd generation pickers. How many of us can say that? !!

Estate Pickers of the Month January 2013 |
Meet George and Candy.
Most pickers already know this couple and a complete
"picking bio" could not be written on them in this small
space. From his humble beginnings as the owner of a small
auto dealership where his down on their luck customers
starting bringing gold and silver to pay on their loan,
George realized the opportunity. After a while this was not
enough to satisfy his appetite and he started his picking
career on the estate sale and auction path. We first ran
into him in the mid 90's at the old Dargate auction gallery
on Baum Blvd. Standing at the 2nd floor jewelry counter
inspecting Edwardian pieces with his loupe, which is still a
common posture for him. Although Candy has been known to
pick up a designer bag or household item from time to time,
George is strictly focused on his prey, precious metal,
antique and/or costume Jewelry or decorative arts. You will
find George and Candy just about anywhere on any day,
auction or tag sale. They will pick garage, yard and moving
sales along the way. Every liquidator knows George and he
has been on the IN and OUT with many of them over the years
but they all respect him for what he knows. We once overheard
a liquidator tell an employee to hide the Jewelry as George
approached fearing he would identify a valuable piece they
failed to recognize! Such is the life of George and Candy!
Talk to them, they are very friendly!

Estate Pickers of the Month December 2012 |
Meet Christy and her younger sister, Amy,
are both students at Pitt. Christy is pursuing a Master’s in
Archives and Preservation, while Amy is finishing up her
undergraduate degree in Molecular Biology. Though they are
drawn to all sorts of “old stuff,” from apothecary bottles
to antique mourning jewelry, they are most passionate about
vintage clothing from the 1900’s-1960’s. Check out
Christy's Blog.
Christy and Amy love wearing clothes that have long histories of
adventures and alterations, and they constantly strive to
expand their knowledge of fabrics, construction techniques,
and historical fashion trends. Amy’s favorite part of estate
sale picking is restoring a damaged garment to its former
glory with a good soak and some hand stitching. Christy’s
favorite part is chatting with other folks in line while
waiting for a sale to open (long-time pickers tell the best
stories!). Among their top finds to date are a 1930’s bias
cut gown, a vintage Japanese kimono, and an entire box of
1950’s party dresses.
Chat them up in line, they are really knowledgeable,
AND Friendly!
